Dear Members of the Society of Wetland Scientists South Central Chapter,
Mark your calendars! We're excited to invite you to our upcoming chapter meeting in the beautiful Ozark Mountains at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR, from October 9-10, 2025.
Our meeting will be held at the Don Tyson Center (1371 W Altheimer Dr., Fayetteville, AR 72704) and promises two engaging days:
- Thursday, October 9: A full day of insightful presentations from leading wetland scientists and practitioners. Stay tuned for the detailed agenda, coming soon!
- Friday, October 10: An enriching field tour exploring the fascinating urban wetlands of Northwest Arkansas.
Call for Abstracts: Share Your Wetland Science!
We encourage wetland students and professionals passionate about advancing our field to present their work. Submit an abstract (300 words or less) by September 5, 2025, through the following link: Call for Abstracts Link.
When submitting, please indicate your preference for an oral or poster presentation. Students wishing to be considered for the Best Student Research Awards should also indicate their intent during the abstract submission process. Acceptance notifications will be sent via email closer to the meeting date.
Best Student Research Awards: Recognition for Emerging Scholars
The SWS South Central Chapter is proud to support the next generation of wetland scientists through our Best Student Research Awards. Outstanding student presentations and research posters will be recognized with monetary awards during the Chapter Meeting. Don't forget to indicate your interest in being judged when you submit your abstract!
Engaging Field Tour: Discovering Urban Wetlands
Join us on Friday, October 10th, for a unique tour showcasing the often-underappreciated ecological value and beauty of wetlands within the rapidly developing urban landscape of Northwest Arkansas. This tour, specifically designed for SWS members, will highlight:
- Surprising Biodiversity: Explore unique habitats teeming with diverse plant and animal life, including species of conservation concern, right within city limits.
- Conservation in Action: Witness firsthand how proactive efforts are preserving these valuable ecosystems and transforming them into accessible natural areas, parks, and educational spaces for the community.
- Management Strategies: Learn directly from expert guides about the specific techniques used in urban wetland management, including habitat restoration, invasive species control, water quality monitoring, and the creation of sustainable public access. This practical knowledge can offer valuable insights for your own wetland-related projects.
- Ecological Significance: Understand the crucial role these urban wetlands play in water filtration, flood control, and overall ecosystem health.
